OTHER Anderlecht stepped out of the project for the new national football stadium. Plan B for the club is the enlargement of the current stadium, but also that plan has been put on hold. But why?

As announced before, the Eurostadium project is financially not viable for Anderlecht. The yearly rental costs is too high compared to the income it would generate and too many details remain unclear. Therefore the club decided to end its support for the project for now. "Negotiations are still ongoing, but not between Anderlecht and constructor Ghelamco. Ghelamco is currently talking with other stakeholders about the future of the project." It's expected they'll contact Anderlecht again in later phase to try to get them back on board.

So it seems that plan B, the stadium enlargement, is for now Anderlecht best option. But that plan has also been placed on hold. The club intented to enlarge the stadium to 40.000 seats, but the local authorities only gave a permit for an enlargement to 30.000 seats. The investment the club has to make remains high, but for only 9.000 extra places. This means it's simply not financially interesting.

"For now, we'll await further details about the national stadium. As soon as we have those, we'll decide how to move forward", manager Van Holsbeeck explained.
