1-1: Anderlecht Overcome Nine Man Bordeaux

Anderlecht are through to the Round of 16 of the UEFA Cup, courtesy of Chatelle's goal in the 33rd minute. The away goal meant that Bordeaux needed an insurmountable 3 goals to advance, a task impossible with 2 players sent off.


Anderlecht's 300th game in European competition saw the return of Guillaume Gillet from a 1 match ban and Hassan from the African Cup of Nations. The former started while the latter was a substitute in the 69th minute.

Thomas Chatelle's goal was the result of great team work all over the park. Biglia cleared the ball near the half way line to Boussoufa, who outmuscled a Bordeaux player to launch a swift counterattack. He passed it short to the left to Akin, who immediately crossed it low and hard near the penalty spot where Chatelle's well-timed run, perfect first touch and left-foot finish gave Anderlecht a surprising lead.

After Anderlecht went 1-0 up, it was Bordeaux who was doing the catching up. It continued to push men forward and were only interrupted by the half-time break.

Fernando Cavenaghi would equalise in the 71st minute by combining with Micoud but they would lose all the momentum the next minute as Tremoulinas was sent off for a nasty foul on Gillet.

This situation meant that Bordeaux needed to score another goal with 10 men just to send the fixture to extra time. It was not to be as Chalme picked up two yellow cards 3 minutes before injury time, reducing Bordeaux to 9, barely able to defend against Anderlecht, let alone score.

Anderlecht now faces Bayern Munich who set things right with a 5-1 drubbing of Aberdeen.
