Anderlecht coach Vercauteren had it right when he warned of a difficult game against Germinal Beerschot. His team suffered a 2-0 loss which leaves last year's champions trailing 7 points behind leaders Club Bruges.

The opening quarter of the game proved to be balanced with neither team managing to create worthwhile chances. It were the visitors who made the first threat. Deschacht’s center found the tall Frutos who headed wide. Immediately after, however, Germinal Beerschot opened the score. Dosunmu found his fellow striker Malki, who glided the ball into goal.

The goal gave Germinal Beerschot a boost and the home team pressed on. Their efforts were almost rewarded when Dosunmu found Malki a second time. This time the Belgian striker’s shot hit the crossbar. Two minutes later the roles were reversed when Malki isolated Dosunmu before goalkeeper Zitka. The Nigerian striker missed his shot.

Anderlecht tried to set things straight before the break but their efforts only lead to half-baked chances. A shot by Goor was deflected wide. Crosses by Frutos and Wasilewski lacked precision to cause any threat.

The opening quarter of the second half was action-packed with chances at both ends of the pitch. Frutos extended a throw-in, Hassan aimed his header too high. At the other side, Colman had an opportunity but his shot went wide. 60 minutes into the game, Hassan forced Steppe into a save. The Beerschot goalkeeper blocked the Egyptian shot with both fists.

The game then became more grim. Firstly, Deschacht took a yellow card after a nasty tackle, then Frutos was shown a yellow card for protest. Colman was shown his second yellow after a two-feet tackle on Juhasz. Vercauteren reacted with two substitutions. Legear and Van Damme replaced Wasilewski and Polak.

It was the home team, however, who sealed the game with a second goal. Malki, who had been a menace for the Anderlecht defense throughout the game, found Losada. The Argentinian’s shot curled past Zitka to put Beerschot 2-0 ahead with 15 minutes to go.

Sporting could not overcome the deficit, despite the advantage of having an opposition player sent off. Another uninspired Anderlecht game meant the second defeat of the season for the Mauves and sees them trailing further behind leaders Club Bruges.
