Anderlecht lost 1-0 to Fenerbahçe in the third preliminary round of the Champions League. Alex scored the only goal of the match. Anderlecht can still turn the tide in the return game in two weeks.

Fenerbahçe took the initiative in the first half and dominated throughout. Anderlecht received an early warning when Kezman was free to latch on to a center. His header went just wide. At the half hour mark, however the Turks scored from an almost identical situation. Aurelio was free to center and his fellow Brazilian Alex did not hesitate to head the ball past Zitka.

The second half proved to be quite different than the first. It was now Anderlecht that pressed on and searched for that important away goal. Early into that second half Jan Polak forced Serdar into a save. The Fenerbahçe goalkeeper made another important save after a Wasilewski header.

Anderlecht continued to dominate and pushed on, while Fenerbahçe tried to counter. Mpenza was brought in for Tchité and soon created an occasion. He skipped past Edu and sent a dangerous centre across the Fenerbahçe goal. Unfortunately no Anderlecht player was able to latch on to it.

The game thus ended on a disappointing 1-0. A difficult task awaits Vercauteren's men in the return game in two weeks.
