INTERVIEWS Felice Mazzu spoke to the press yesterday for the first time as Anderlecht's manager. He told how honored he feels to work here, but also answered sporting questions. "3-5-2 like at Union? I adapt my system in function of the players I have at my disposal."

About the way he left Union, Mazzu did not want to talk. About Anderlecht all the more. "When Anderlecht calls, you don't hesitate. Both in terms of status and history, it is still the biggest club in Belgium. I want to bring beautiful soccer, but the results are the most important thing."

First goal

At Union, Mazzu forged a team that was mentally very strong and pulled together. He wants to do the same at Anderlecht. "For me, a group that is well cohesive is the basis of everything. That is crucial to be successful. That is my first goal and I have also made that clear to the players."

That Mazzu wants to forge a strong unit is not surprising. He is known for that. Much more will be looking forward to how he wants to play soccer. A 3-5-2 like at Union is not a certainty. "I adapt my system according to the players I have at my disposal," the coach said. "I want to develop a style of play that matches the club's philosophy."

Mazzu says he will respectfully handle the project bequeathed to him by Vincent Kompany, but that he will add his own touches. "I want to bring attacking football, with an emphasis on speed and verticality," he says.

Giving youngsters opportunities

Anderlecht is known for putting a lot of effort into their own youth. Mazzu does not want to deviate from that line. "The intention is to give opportunities to youngsters who are ready," says Mazzu. Who does indicate that there must be a balance between giving young people opportunities and pursuing results. "Because I want to win every match. Whether it's a practice game, or a match in the Cup, league or European."

In that youth project, Guillaume Gillet will play an important role. "He knows the house very well. He won four titles here and is steeped in the values and culture of this club. He will use that experience to make youngsters better."

Transfers

Finally, a word on summer transfers. With Abdulrazak and Angulo, purple-white already gained two reinforcements. Undoubtedly, more will follow. "Peter Verbeke knows the profiles I want and I realize that resources are not endless. Our communication is very good. It's up to me to make the new players pay off quickly."
