Vanhaezebrouck and Kompany agree: goal difference must be decisive

OTHER Anderlecht and Gent have the same amount of points, but because Gent counts one more won match, so they are above Anderlecht. Vincent Kompany criticized the rule on the press conference afterwards. His Gent colleague Hein Vanhaezebrouck agreed with him.


"Belgium is the only league that doesn't take the goal difference into account," said Kompany. "But that's just the rule and we respect that. We just have to do our job now."

Kompany's Gent colleague Vanhaezebrouck agreed with him. "I am in favour of a ranking based on goal difference. I think that's much fairer than the current system," he said. "Then we just wouldn't get into it, because Anderlecht's is much better." Anderlecht has +31, Gent +21.

"Anderlecht deserve Champions' play-offs"

Vanhaezebrouck went on to say that he finds it ridiculous that the Champions' play-offs are played with only four teams and not six. "That monstrosity was created to be able to play with 18 clubs in 1A," said Vanhaezebrouck. "There are many good, big teams in Belgium. So you should be able to compete with at least six."

Vanhaezebrouck thinks it's a pity for Kompany that Anderlecht is in danger of dropping out. "I sympathize with him, because Anderlecht has done a fantastic job. They deserve to be in the Champions' play-offs. That chance is still there, by the way."
