Anderlecht take the point, Genk the national title

GAMES Racing Genk has been crowned champion 2018 - 2019 on Thursday. A draw at Anderlecht was enough, as Club Brugge lost in Liège. Anderlecht are doing a bad thing: AA Gent won and jumps over purple and white to fifth place.


Genk took the lead early in the game. Heynen opened the score after 11 minutes. The people of Genk wanted more, but Anderlecht could count on a strong Didillon. Just before half time, Anderlecht got the chance to score 1-1, but Santini hit a pass of Cobbaut against the post.

Anderlecht and Genk also made it a pleasant showpiece after the break. Halfway through the second period the signs hung in balance when Bolasie headed a cross from Saelemaekers past Vukovic. In the meantime, Club Brugge had fallen behind in Liège. The Genk fans started partying. Rightly so, because in the Astridpark it remained 1-1 while Standard completely killed Bruges with a second goal.

Anderlecht do a bad thing because AA Gent did win. Deep in extra time, Sorloth made it 1-2 at Antwerp. Anderlecht and Ghent now both have 32 points, but Ghent stands before the Brussels players because they got half a point at the start of Play-Off 1. They have to give that up again with a tie. On Sunday, Anderlecht and Ghent play a direct duel against each other in the Ghelamco Arena for place five and the possibility of European football.
