Cup victory KV Mechelen can help Anderlecht to Europe

OTHER KV Mechelen won the Cup of Belgium on Wednesday and that can be a good thing for Anderlecht. If KV Mechelen are later convicted in the match fixing file, the number five from Play-Off 1 plays the European barrages. But the calendar is a problem.


Normally the cup winner will go directly in the Europa League group stage and the number four in Play-Off 1 will play against the winner of Play-Off 2 for a ticket to the Europa League preliminaries. If KV Mechelen is found guilty of match fixing, it loses its European license. All European tickets then move up one place.

In that case the number five from Play-Off 1 plays against the winner of Play-Off 2 for a ticket to the preliminary rounds of the Europa League. Anderlecht are currently fifth in Play-Off 1. It has one point more than AA Gent.

But there is a problem: the barrage match is scheduled on May 26, while the final arguments in the match fixing file are scheduled for May 28. The ruling will follow later. The future must tell how this problem will be solved.
