GAMES Anderlecht has defeated Russian topclub Zenit Saint Petersburg in the first leg of the 1/16th finals of the Europa League. Frank Acheampong decided the game with two important goals.

Anderlecht-coach René Weiler gave other players the opportunity to show themselves (e.g. Goalkeeper Rubén, Deschacht, Bruno, Thelin). It worked out well: Anderlecht led with 2-0 after 32 minutes of playing time, thanks to two goals of Acheampong.

After the lead, Anderlecht left the ball to Zenit, but the Russian side was unable to create dangerous opportunities. Anderlecht was hazardous on the counter attack, but the third goal couldn't be realised. Zenit, on the other hand, came close to the 2-1 five minutes before the final whistle, but Rubén was able to defend the clean sheet in his debut for the Mauves.

The 2-0-victory gives the Mauves an excellent position to qualify themselves for the 1/8th finals next week.
