Proto: "Not being selected also has benefits"

Silvio Proto doesn't dream of playing for the national team anymore. There are young keepers like Thibaut Courtois and Simon Mignolet who can't be put aside easily.


When national coach Marc Wilmots was looking for a third keeper, he chose Koen Casteels instead of Silvio Proto. Proto hasn't talked to Wilmots about the fact of not being selected yet. "We haven't talked once since he became national coach", tells Proto.

Yet, he doesn't exclude the possibility of going to the World Championships in Brazil next year. "There is always a chance that a goal keeper get injured, but that's not what I'm hoping for", adds Proto.

The goalkeeper thinks it also has some benefits if you don't belong to the selection. The players who didn't have to play an international game, could enjoy their four days off. Proto went together with his wife to New York, something that's not possible during the season. "I enjoyed our time off".
