GAMES - OTHER Belgium lost their first match on Euro 2016. The Red Devils were completely overclassed on tactical level by the Italians. Belgian coach Wilmots had chosen for three controlling midfielders with Nainggolan, Witsel and Fellaini. The result was a slow pace and lack of creativity.
The Italians knew what they were doing though and took advantage of the Belgian weaknesses. Giaccherini scored on a long ball. Pelle should have doubled the lead, but missed in front of an open goal.
Wilmots had not learnt his lesson during half time and started in the same formation. The pace went up though, but the Red Devils lacked creativity. Lukaku had the best chance to equalise, but missed in front of an open goal. Eventually Mertens, Origi and Carrasco were brought into play. Finally, the squadra azzuri were pushed back. Yet the Italians still overclassed the Belgians on tactical level and neutralised practically all danger. In stoppage time, the 0-2 was put on the scoreboard on a counter attack.
