Belgium did not take a good start in the campaign for the European Championship. The Belgians lost the first match against Germany with 0-1 after a mistake of Van Buyten.

Also the second game was lost, this time against Turkey. The Belgians took the lead via Van Buyten. The Turks equalised right after half time. When Kompany took a second yellow, the home side managed to take control over the game. They came 2-1 ahead, but again Van Buyten brought Belgium, down to ten men, back in the game: 2-2. Eventually Turkey scored the winning goal with a deflected effort: 3-2.
