Anderlecht: the way to the title

Anderlecht took their 27 title yesterday. Today, they can colour their title by winning against Lierse. Here is a summary of the season of RSC Anderlecht.


Before the season:
Anderlecht wanted to become champion before the season. With Pär Zetterberg, they had bought a real RSCA-legend. But he didn't play much during the season. Before the season, their was a quarrel, because coach Broos didn't want Walter Baseggio and Zetterberg in one team. Zetterberg was sent to the bench, and Broos showed he was right. Anderlecht started the season perfect, with 21/21.

13 away matches in a row won:
From the start of the season until 22 February in Westerlo, Anderlecht has won all their away matches. They scored 39/39. In the Champions League, it was just the opposite, they lost all three of their away matches.

Kompany and Vanden Borre:
Anderlecht discovered a very big season at the beginning of the season: Vincent Kompany. In the mean time, all European topclubs are interested in him. He would cost 20 million euro. But he isn't the only youth player in the first team of Anderlecht. Also Anthony Vanden Borre made his appearance the last months. He is only 16, and now he's already selected for the Red Devils. Of course, other players also made the success of Anderlecht a fact. Aruna received the Golden Shoe, after a perfect first round. In the second round, he didn't play so well. Also Zitka, Baseggio, Deschacht and Tihinen were key players. Mornar left Anderlecht during the winter break, he now plays in England, for Portsmouth.

No topper won:
They lost their first points against Bruges. Later on, they lost against Standard with 1-4 on their own pitch. The toppers seemed to be difficult games for the Mauves. They couldn't win a single topper this season. They lost 1-0 in Club Bruges, and they drawed against Standard.

27th title:
After a long and exciting season, Anderlecht became champion on 23 April. Competitor Club Bruges didn't win against Mouscron, so the Mauves became champion without playing. Lots of happy players, fans, staff,... It's from 2001 ago that Anderlecht had won their last title. It's the most succesful team in Belgian football history. If they can keep talented players, like Vincent Kompany, it also looks good for next year. The competitors will have to e strong next year... very strong!
